What is a rectifier transformer?

2025-12-27

The rectifier transformer is the Power Transformer of the rectification equipment. Its function is to convert alternating current into an alternating voltage suitable for the rectifier to work with, and then output a direct current through the rectifier. Working principle: The rectifier transformer operates based on the law of electromagnetic induction. When alternating current passes through the primary winding, a changing magnetic field is generated in the iron core, and then a corresponding alternating voltage is induced in the secondary winding. By adjusting the ratio of the number of turns of the primary and secondary windings, the voltage can be increased or decreased. The rectifier circuit uses a unidirectional conducting element to cut off the negative half-cycle of the alternating current, obtaining pulsating direct current, and then through a filtering circuit, a smoother direct current is obtained.
Structural features: The rectifier transformer mainly consists of the iron core, windings, insulating materials, and cooling system. The iron core is usually made by stacking high magnetic conductivity silicon steel sheets to reduce iron loss. The wire cross-section of the windings is large, and high-strength insulating materials need to be used. The cooling system varies depending on the power size, including natural air cooling, forced air cooling, and oil cooling methods.
Performance features: It has stable electrical performance, high dynamic stability, good thermal stability, strong overload capacity, superior performance indicators, significant energy-saving effect, and Low Noise. Its impedance ratio is about 30% higher than that of a power transformer of the same capacity to suppress di/dt and effectively protect the rectifier components.
Main functions: It can precisely provide the alternating input voltage required by the rectifier; has high short-circuit impedance to limit short-circuit current and improve the rectifier commutation process; can output shifted phase to increase the number of output pulses, reduce DC ripple, and reduce the harmonic content of the input-side grid-side current; has strong anti-harmonic capability and can withstand the harmonic current generated by the rectifier load.
Application fields: Widely used in electrochemical industries, traction direct current power supply, transmission direct current power supply, direct current transmission, electroplating, electrical machining, excitation, charging, and electrostatic dust removal, etc., and can also be used as direct current power supply for electroplating, electrical processing, excitation, charging, and electrostatic dust removal.
