The function and significance of the transformer oil reservoir

When the volume of The Transformer oil expands or decreases with temperature, the oil reservoir will adjust the oil level to ensure that the transformer tank is always filled. 
Without an oil reservoir, the fluctuation of the oil level in the oil tank may lead to various negative consequences:
First, when the oil level drops, the exposed iron core and coils will affect heat dissipation and insulation.
Second, as the oil level fluctuates, air will enter and exit through the gaps in the oil tank cover. Due to the higher temperature of the upper oil layer, the oil will rapidly oxidize and absorb moisture. The oil level in the oil reservoir is lower than that in the oil tank, minimizing the contact surface between the oil and air and preventing excessive oxidation and moisture absorption.
Third, the oil in the oil reservoir rarely participates in the circulation of the tank. Its temperature is much lower than that of the upper oil layer, and the oil oxidation process is much slower. Therefore, the oil reservoir can prevent excessive oxidation.
The role and significance of the oil reservoir
1. Although the oil reservoir is an auxiliary device, its performance directly affects the lifespan and reliability of the transformer:
2. Reducing the contact between oil and air, lowering the acid value and dielectric loss of the oil, and delaying insulation aging;
3. Balancing the volume changes of the oil, avoiding excessive pressure on the oil tank or negative pressure causing air intake;
The oil level can be directly reflected by the oil level gauge, making it easy to determine whether the transformer is leaking oil or lacking oil.
With the development of transformer technology, fully sealed, large-capacity, intelligent oil reservoirs (such as those with remote oil level monitoring functions) are gradually becoming widespread, further enhancing the operational stability and maintenance convenience of the transformer.
