I. Definition and Principles
An oil-immersed transformer is a power transformer that uses mineral insulating oil (transformer oil) as the main insulation and cooling medium. It relies on the convection circulation of the oil to remove the heat generated by the operation of the core and windings, and the oil isolates the air to prevent the insulation of the coils from aging and breakdown.
Core working principle: Electromagnetic induction. The alternating current input on the primary side generates an alternating magnetic field, which is coupled through the iron core, and an induced voltage of different voltages is generated on the secondary side to achieve voltage boosting / voltage reduction power distribution.
II. Core Composition Structure
1. Body (Core Heat Conductive Components)
Iron Core: High magnetic conductivity cold-rolled silicon steel sheets are laminated, forming a magnetic flux path, reducing no-load loss; it is divided into laminated type and amorphous alloy iron core (low-loss energy-saving model).
Winding Coils
High-voltage Winding: Many turns, thin wire; Low-voltage Winding: Few turns, thick wire;
The material is divided into pure copper winding, aluminum winding, and copper-aluminum composite;
Insulation paper and insulation tubes are placed between layers and turns to isolate and prevent short circuits.
Insulation Components: Insulation paper, support rods, pads, lead wire bushings, which separate the high and low voltage windings to ensure electrical insulation.
2. Oil Tank and Cooling System (Oil Storage Shell)
Main Oil Tank: Steel plate welded sealed container, capable of holding transformer oil and soaking the transformer body;
Heat Dissipation Structure
Wave-shaped Oil Tank: Standard for small transformers, the oil tank wall has natural heat dissipation (ONAN);
Plate-type Heat Exchanger: Medium and large-capacity external heat exchangers, large-capacity equipped with fans for forced air cooling (ONAF);
Tube-type Heat Exchanger, forced oil circulation water cooling (for high-power industrial / power station transformers).
Oil Sump (Oil Storage Tank)
Most conventional oil transformers have an oil sump on the top, compensating for the oil volume expansion and contraction caused by temperature changes; it is equipped with a desiccant breather (silicon dioxide drying agent) to filter out water vapor in the air and prevent the oil from getting damp.
American box-type transformers, fully sealed oil transformers have no oil sump, relying on the buffer space inside the oil tank to compensate for the oil pressure.
3. Protection and Safety Accessories
High and Low Voltage Terminals: Ceramic / composite materials, the coil leads protrude from the oil tank, isolating the live conductors from the box body;
Tap Switch: No-excited tap switch (power-off voltage regulation), on-load tap switch (live voltage regulation), adjusting the number of turns to adapt to the voltage fluctuation of the power grid;
Protection Devices
Gas Relay (for oil sump models): Monitoring internal short circuits, gas faults, light gas alarm, heavy gas trip;
Pressure Release Valve: Releases pressure when the internal oil pressure surges due to internal faults, preventing the oil tank from exploding;
Oil Temperature Gauge, Oil Level Gauge: Real-time monitoring of temperature and oil level;
Grounding Terminal: Reliable grounding of the box body and iron core to ensure personal safety.
Fuses: Standard for outdoor distribution transformers on the high-voltage side, resisting lightning overvoltage.
4. Transformer Oil Functions
Cooling: Circulation flow removes the heat of windings and cores;
Insulation: The breakdown strength is much higher than air, isolating the high and low voltage windings;
Antioxidant, moisture-proof: Isolates the air, delaying the aging of paper insulation.
Common Oil Products: Paraffin-based mineral oil, natural ester environmentally friendly oil (flame retardant, environmentally friendly, used for photovoltaic / indoor use).
